The personal products industry is seeing a growing demand for greener goods, with manufacturing companies incorporating eco-sourced ingredients into their brands for the health of the planet and to meet consumer demand. According to a recent study by market research firm Kline & Company of Little Falls, NJ, the natural personal care market in the U.S. jumped 19% to $2 billion in sales for 2008.

At least two out of three beauty product users indicate they are interested in some type of "ecobeauty" products. This label incorporates products that address issues of being natural, organic, green/eco-friendly, or socially conscious/responsible products.

"Whether the consumer demand is driven by the desire to save the planet, concerns about product safety and potential health risks, or just being 'on-trend,' being part of the current environmental movement makes good business sense," noted Karen Grant, VP at the NPD Group, Inc., a NY-based marketing firm.

Additionally, the industry is seeing a growing use of botanicals in the U.S. and Europe. Kline & Company's study, "Specialty Actives and Active Delivery Systems for Personal Care 2008," noted that the increased use of botanicals is one of the major changes in the cosmetics and toiletries industry in recent history.
